Hálft ár af hörmungum og hetjudáð

Í dag 10. Maí  er hálft ár liðið frá því hörmungarnar byrjuðu með jarðskjálftum jarðsigi og flekahreyfingum í Grindavík. Þann dag vorum við rekin af heimilum okkar út í endalausa óvissu sem ekki sér fyrir endann á. Í kjölfarið fylgdu fjögur mánaðarleg gos í næsta nágrenni við bæinn okkar og þegar þetta er skrifað halda allir í sér andanum og bíða þess fimmta. Aprílmánuður var fyrsti mánuðurinn sem náttúran sló okkur ekki utan undir frá því í október með aflmiklum náttúruhamförum.

En það er annað afl  sem birst hefur sem mótvægi við hinn óvægna eyðingamátt. Það er fólkið sjálft sem byggir bæinn. Með þrautseigju og æðruleysi hefur það sýnt hvað í því býr. Þar sem einhver von hefur verið að halda starfsemi í gangi hefur það verið gert. Þar sem þurft hefur að verja verðmæti fyrirtækja eða sveitarfélagsins  hefur ekki staðið á fólki að mæta. Oft hafa hagsmunir atvinnunnar og byggðalagsins verið settir ofar eigin hagsmunum. Fólk vinnur hetjudáð á hverjum degi við vinnu og til að komast sjálft af í ringulreiðinni sem fylgir óundirbúnum búferlaflutningum. Allt kapp er lagt á að börnin skaðist sem minnst. Það er erfiðasta verkefnið.

Mér er þakklæti efst í huga þegar ég hugsa til samstarfsmanna minna og ég hef þá trú að algóður Guð fylgi okkur á vegferð þeirra breytinga sem við erum nú að upplifa.  Verum þolinmóð gagnvart verkefninu og verum eins gætin og kostur er við þær erfiðu aðstæður sem við erum að kljást við. En umfram allt skulum við vera góð og tillitsöm við hvert annað.

Six Months of Disasters and Heroics

 

Today, the 10th of May, marks the 6-month anniversary of the disastrous seismic activities that began with earthquakes and ground deformations in Grindavík.  The day that we were evacuated from our homes into uncertainty with no end in sight. In the following four months we had four volcanic eruptions around our town, and at the time this is written, we are all holding our breath and waiting for the fifth one.  The month of April was the first month since October that Mother Nature didn´t slap us with powerful natural disasters.

But there is another force that has appeared to balance the unrelenting destructive power. It is the people of the town. Through perseverance and fortitude, they have shown what they are capable of. Where there has been some hope of keeping operations going, it has been done. When the value of companies or the municipality has had to be protected, people have shown up. Often, the interests of the business and the community have been placed above personal interests. People do heroic things every day both at work and to survive the chaos of sudden relocations. Every effort is made to minimize harm to the children. That is the most challenging task.

Gratitude is at the top of my mind when I think of my colleagues, and I have faith that the almighty God will accompany us on the journey of the changes we are currently experiencing. Let's be patient with the project and be as careful as possible in the difficult conditions we are dealing with. But above all, let's be kind and considerate to each other.

Pół roku tragedii i bohaterstwa.

Dzisiaj, 10 maja, minęło sześć miesięcy od katastrofy, która rozpoczęła się od trzęsienia ziemi, osunięcia się ziemi i ruchów płyty tektonicznej w Grindavíku. Tego dnia wypędzono nas z domów w niekończącą się niepewność, której końca nie widać. Potem nastąpiły cztery co miesięczne erupcje w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie naszego miasta i w chwili pisania tego tekstu wszyscy wstrzymują oddech w oczekiwaniu na piątą. Miesiąc kwiecień był pierwszym od października, w którym natura nie zaatakowała nas potężnymi klęskami żywiołowymi.

 

Ale jest jeszcze inna siła, która pojawiła się jako przeciwwaga dla nieubłaganej mocy zniszczenia. To ludzie sami którzy tworzą miasto. Z wytrwałością i hartem ducha pokazali, do czego są zdolni. Tam, gdzie była nadzieja na kontynuację prac, została ona zrealizowana. Ponieważ należało chronić wartość przedsiębiorstw i gminy, ludzie wstawili się by w tym uczestniczyć. Często interesy miejsca zatrudnienia i miejscowość traktowane były powyżej własnych priorytetów. Ludzie na co dzień dokonują bohaterskich czynów w pracy i starają się przetrwać chaos związany z nagłymi przeprowadzkami. Dokładamy wszelkich starań, aby zminimalizować krzywdę dzieci. Jest to najtrudniejsze zadanie.

 

Kiedy myślę o moich współpracownikach, na pierwszym miejscu pojawia się wdzięczność i wierzę, że wszechmogący Bóg będzie nam towarzyszył na drodze zmian, których obecnie doświadczamy. Uzbrójmy się w cierpliwość przy tym zadaniu i zachowajmy jak największą ostrożność w trudnych warunkach, z którymi mamy do czynienia. Ale przede wszystkim bądźmy dla siebie nawzajem mili i troskliwi.
